What is pity date?

A pity date is when someone agrees to go on a date with someone else solely out of sympathy or guilt. Usually, the person giving the pity date has no actual romantic interest in the other person, but they feel guilty or sorry for them and don't want to hurt their feelings. Pity dates are usually one-time occurrences and do not lead to anything more serious. They can be harmful to both parties involved, as the person receiving the pity date may get their hopes up for a real relationship, while the person giving the pity date may feel uncomfortable and forced to do something they don't want to do.
